Objective
The research is focused on three main lines. In condensed matter theory the following items will be considered: superconductivity; electron-phonon aspects, phenomenology, strong correlations, novel mechanisms; many-electron phenomena on surfaces; quantum Hall effect; mesoscopic quantum systems.
In mathematical physics the following will be carried out: conformal invariance in statistical mechanics of order-disorder phase transitions statistical description of integrable systems (integrable turbulence), application to hydrodynamics, to the theory of wave turbulence and to non-Newtonian hydrodynamics.
And in computational materials science the following will be done: simulations of novel materials: quantum Monte-Carlo, method of Car-Parrinello, exact diagonalization, symmetries and new algorithms.
The programme aims to bring together at the Institute for Scientific Interchange in Torino, groups of researchers for the topics above. Approximately half of the participants in each group will be from the NIS. Each topic will be treated during a period of one to three months each year. Experience in the past has shown that such a recurrent scheme is very efficient in maintaining close collaborations over long periods.
A special effort will be made to train young NIS scientists. Senior scientists from the NIS will be accompanied by young Post Doctorates and Ph.D. students.
