Synthesis and investigation of composite three-dimensional structures for photonic applications

Objective

The aim of the project is to develop the chemical approach of the fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) regular structures based on artificial opals impregnated with different dopants. 3D regular structures of artificial opals are to be prepared by controllable self-organization of uniform spherical silica particles with desirable sizes tunable on the colloid preparation stage. The photonic band gap of artificial opals lying in the visible and near infra-red region depends on the silica globule size and is to be enhanced by impregnation of interglobule voids with materials whose refractive indices are higher than that of silica globules. The photonic band gap allows controlling the emission of luminescent materials like rare earth and transition elements and semiconductor nanocrystals embedded into artificial opals using different impregnation methods. Changes of optical resonance and possibly interesting conduction, magnetic and catalytic effects are expected for ultra fine metal particles distributed in periodical pores of 3D microstructures. Three methods of impregnation are to be developed for fabrication of composite structures, such as (i) a co-precipitation of silica globules and dopants at the stage of colloid preparation, (ii) an impregnation of the fabricated solid 3D lattice by dipping in a solution containing different dopants and (iii) an ion implantation of transition metals and lanthanides in 3D structures.

Research activities

At the first stage, silica particles with narrow size distributions and desirable sizes are to be synthesized in colloidal solutions. The principles of controllable self-organization of uniform silica globules into regular solid 3D superlattices are to be established.

At the second stage, an impregnation of the fabricated solid 3D regular structures with different materials (oxides having high refractive indices, ultra fine metal particles, optically active lanthanides and transition metals, highly photoluminescent semiconductor nanocrystals) using different approaches (methods of colloid chemistry, sol-gel technique, ion implantation) and their structural and optical characterization by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray diffraction, small-angle X-ray scattering, photoluminescence, transmission and reflection spectroscopy, Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry, Nuclear Reaction Analysis, and Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis are to be done.
Expected results

The project is devoted to develop the chemical approach to the fabrication of three-dimensional regular structures of photonic crystals impregnated with different dopants, their structural and primary spectroscopic characterization. The basic principles of the fabrication of novel light-emitting devices and optical filters based on photonic crystals are expected to be developed within this project.
