Objective
The main objective of this project is to provide basic phase stability data for the design of advanced magnesium alloys with improved mechanical properties and reduced density for application in automotive and aeronautic industry.
A focal preparation of new alloys with improved mechanical properties and low density requires the knowledge of the phase diagrams, crystal structures, physical, chemical and thermodynamic properties of intermetallic compounds.
This project will include investigation and construction of the isothermal sections of phase diagrams of the systems Mg-Li-Gd and Mg-Li-Ca.
Investigations in our project can be split up in several sub-tasks:
- Critical review of existing literature information and first phase diagram calculations to define crucial experiments
- Phase diagram and thermochemical measurements using X-ray diffraction, optical and electron microscopy, differential thermal analysis and solution calorimetry
- equilibrium phase and structure analysis
- microstructure and solidification behaviour
- thermal analysis and calorimetric measurements
- Final thermodynamic modelling using state of the art computer software and application calculations.
As results, we expect to:
- obtain evaluation of the experimental and literature data about the magnesium ternary alloys;
- obtain experimental and thermodynamic data about the phase diagrams Mg-Li-Gd and Mg-Li-Ca;
- construct the isothermal sections of the Mg-Li-Gd and Mg-Li-Ca phase diagrams on the base of experimental data and thermodynamic calculations;
- obtain reliable and quantitative statements concerning stable and metastable phase equilibria of these Mg-Li-X alloys and indicate optimum processing conditions;
- obtain indications for related Mg-Li-X systems from the Mg-Li-Gd, Mg-Li-Ca model systems.
