Dye-doped liquid crystals as nonlinear optical materials for intra-and extracavity laser elements

Objective

The goal of this project is to improve the understanding of non-linear-optical phenomena with different physical origins in dye doped and undoped liquid crystals through the collaboration of a multidisciplinary team that includes laser scientists, liquid crystal experts, theoreticians, chemists and experimental physicists. The mechanisms by which conjugated waves form in photoactive LCs in response to high intensity pulsed laser radiation will be studied, aiding the design of intra- and extracavity laser elements, which may use such materials. The project takes advantage of the choice of various interaction geometies and different compositions of both the LCs and the dyes. The response of the LCs will be varied through parameters such as temperature and surface alignment techniques in addition to taking advantage of different materials constants in different samples. Thus an investigation of the energy efficiency and the propagation kinetics of dynamic holograms formed via different nonlinearities in dye-doped LC materials (absorption, saturation, changes of order parameter and local reorientation both of the dye and liquid crystals molecules) will be undertaken. Further, the project aims to determine the optimum conditions for effective low-energy wave front conjugation of laser pulses of nano- and microsecond duration.

The project will also investigate the properties of lasers that include wave front conjugation LC-mirrors and develop LC laser elements for the control of spatial, energy and temporal parameters of the radiation, thus providing wave front correction. The optimum LC-element that the programme aims to produce is a shutter integrated with a WFC mirror.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
