Study of rare earth doped oxide and fluoride crystals for visible or ultraviolet tunable solid-state up conversion lasers

Objective

The main goal of the project is to use up conversion pumping (which means pumping with photons of higher wavelength than the lasing wavelength) to get tunable 4fn-15d to 4fn laser emission in rare earth doped oxide or fluoride single crystals. To perform this project, the proposed activities are
1) The growth and preparation of optically polished crystals, doped with trivalent rare earth ions such as Pr3+, Nd3+, Tm3+;
2) The spectroscopic study, which involves firstly the conventional spectroscopic measurements to construct the energy level diagrams for the rare earth ions in studied crystals and to estimate the lifetimes of the emitted states and, secondly, the investigation of the efficiency of up conversion pumping of the rare earth 4fn-15d states in these materials;
3) The realisation of laser experiments with the crystals showing the best up conversion efficiencies.

This should allow to obtain new solid state laser sources in the visible and/or ultraviolet spectral range which is of great interest for numerous applications.
