Elaboration and quantification of the metallogenic evolution of the Alpine fold systems: the Pontides- Lesser Caucasus sector of the Tethyean Eurasian metallogenic belt

Objective

The overall objective is to detail the evolution of the Pontide-Lesser Caucasus metallotect, common to both Turkey and Georgia. The proposed project represents a unique chance to bring together teams from Georgia and EU-based teams working in Turkey.

At present there is little detailed published information on many of the more significant deposits in the Turkish sector and almost none on deposits in Georgia. In particular the interrelation between volcanism, plutonism and hydrothermal systems is poorly understood. Some of these volcanic hosted massive sulphide deposits are among the largest and most commercially significant of the Tethyean metallogenic belt.

The plan of the project is to investigate representative mineral deposits in Georgia and Turkey, put them in their regional context and produce a detailed metallogenic analysis.

The detailed objects are:

1. To investigate structure, mineralogy and geochemistry and conditions of formation of some of the more important, and representative, mineral deposits in both the Turkish and Georgian parts of the belt.

2. To establish the conditions, timing and chemistry of the hydrothermal systems that formed the deposits.

3. To establish the regional structural and paleogeographical factors controlling the distribution of volcanism, plutonism and mineralization.

4. To elaborate the reconstruction of the metallogenic evolution of the regions of the East Pontic metallotect, NE Turkey and its prolongation in the Lesser Caucasus using GIS techniques.

5. To predict areas with a high probability of occurrence of undiscovered deposits and recommend effective methods for their exploration.

The methodology of investigation will be detailed fieldwork backed up by laboratory study for individual deposits and districts. GIS backed investigations will be used to quantify deposit distribution and identify controlling factors on a regional scale.

The results of the project will be communicated in a workshop and monograph as well as in the regular scientific literature.
