Objective
A phi meson factory named DAPHNE has been constructed at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati, LNF, sponsored by the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, INFN, of Italy. DAPHNE's main mission is the precision studies of CP violation in kaon decay. The study of CP violation at DAPHNE will be done with a new detector built by the international KLOE collaboration. The very innovative KLOE detector has two major components, an exceptionally fast, high resolution sampling calorimeter for detecting and measuring neutral particles, and a truly innovative, large, nearly mass less drift chamber for accurate charged particle tracking with excellent momentum resolution. The very successful construction and commissioning of the chamber in 1997-1999 was supported in part by an INTAS grant (INTAS-96-624). The drift chamber is a cylinder of 4 m in diameter and 3.7 m in length. The chamber was strung with about 52,000 thin aluminium field and tungsten sense wires, and filled mostly with helium gas. It is the largest, as well as the most transparent drift chamber in particle physics experiments.
The primary goal of the proposed project is to maintain stable operation of the drift chamber during two years of data taking at DAPHNE, to contribute to the running of the whole experiment and to take 10 to the 10-th power events of phi-decays needed for a high precision study of CP-violation. CP-violation studies put stringent requirements on the drift chamber performance. Hence, all parameters of the drift chamber have to be carefully monitored. It will be done by the development and improvement of the fast on-line software which in an operator friendly way will present the information about dead and noisy channels among all 12,600 channels of the drift chamber, the drift chamber efficiency, the gas composition. Additional software will be prepared by the common efforts of LNF and ITEP teams which will extend the track recognition capability of the already developed algorithms to three body decays of charged kaons. LNF and BINP teams will check with real data new algorithms developed at Novosibirsk to eliminate background from Ks regeneration in the chamber materials. CP-violation study is the main but not the only topic of physics. Three other important physics subjects will be addressed in the framework of this project.
The Karlsruhe team will measure with high accuracy (order of 1 %) the cross section of electron-positron annihilation into hadrons for energies from the threshold of two pion production to the phi-resonance using the so called "radiative return to lower energies" at the fixed energy of DAPHNE. The BINP team will use the experience gained at VEPP-2M collider at Novosibirsk for further improvement of our knowledge on radiative decays of phi-mesons. The ITEP team will study radiative decays of the charged and neutral kaons to three pions, for the first time seen in an ITEP experiment to check predictions of Chiral Perturbation Theory.
The results of these studies as well as the very valuable technical experience gained with the operation of this most original and challenging drift chamber will be presented at international conferences and published in international scientific journals. Support of this project by INTAS will allow as well experienced as young Russian scientists to work in this experiment both at their home institutes and at LNF.
