Objective
The objectives of the proposal are the following:
- 2D MHD modelling of relativistic outflows with application to astrophysical winds and jets;
- Study of the efficiency of different mechanisms for particle acceleration in winds and jets;
- Modeling of the non-thermal high-energy radiation processes in compact relativistic objects;
- Interpretation of the non-thermal X- and gamma-ray emission from blazers with emphasis on data obtained during recent successful multi-wavelength campaigns with X-ray satellites ASCA, BeppoSAX, and RXTE and very high energy ground-based gamma ray detectors CAT, HEGRA, and Whipple.
The research activity will include numerical simulations of 3D axisymmetric and nonaxisymmetric behaviour of the relativistic plasma with special attention on the conditions under which the magnetic self-collimation of the plasma takes place, the process of the Poynting flux dominated plasma acceleration under the conditions of strong dissipative effects and results of interaction of the relativistic plasma with interstellar medium at the low and large magnetization parameter. All these results are necessary for calculations of X-ray and gamma ray emission from radio pulsars, quasars, micro-quasars and GRBs, which will be performed on the next step of the project. Finally the results of calculations are planned to be used for interpretation of existing data on observations of pulsars and plerions around Crab, PSR1706-44 and Vela, multi-wavelength observations of blazars Markarian 501 and Markarian 421, microquasars and GRBs.
The most important expected results are:
- Determination of conditions at which the magnetic self-collimation of the relativistic plasma takes place. Predictions for observational signature of these conditions in blazars, micro-quasars and gamma-ray bursts;
- Development of models describing transformation of Poynting flux dominated wind into kinetic energy dominated wind in radio pulsars;
- Mechanisms of jet formation in blazars and GRB sources;
- Calculation of brightness distribution of non-thermal radiation of the Crab Nebula in X- and gamma- energy bands;
- Interpretation of the multi-wavelength observations of gamma-blazars.
