Design, construction and commissioning of a large-scale prototype of the PHOS lead tungstate crystal electromagnetic calorimeter of the ALICE experiment

Objetivo

The major objectives of the proposed project are design, construction and commissioning of a large-scale prototype of the PHOS electromagnetic calorimeter of the ALICE experiment. The prototype will have 256 detection channels of lead-tungstate crystals, PbWO4 (PWO), coupled to photodetectors of large-area PIN-diodes with low-noise preamplifiers. It will operate at a temperature of ~-25 §C, stabilized with a precision of ~0.3-0.4 §C. For this purpose the prototype will have a special cooling and thermostabilization system. For monitoring operation conditions of the detection channels an LED monitoring system will be incorporated into the prototype. The prototype will be equipped with a special charged particle veto detector.

The research activity of the project includes the following tasks:

T1. Improvement of the crystal detection channel (crystal detector unit);
T2. Improvement of the cooling and thermostabilization system;
T3. Design, construction and commissioning of a LED monitoring system for the 256 channel prototype;
T4. Design, construction and commissioning of the front-end electronics for the 256 channel prototype;
T5. R&D for a single-channel monolithic preamplifier chip;
T6. Design, construction and commissioning of a data acquisition system for the 256 channel prototype;
T7. Design, construction and commissioning of a large-scale prototype charge particle veto detector;
T8. Tests of the lead-tungstate crystals with the quality control testbenches;
T9. Assembly and test of all the detection channels for the prototype;
T10. Design and construction of a general mechanical structure of the prototype;
T11. Development of a software for monitoring the operation of the prototype during beam tests and experiments and for on-line as well as off-line analysis of the experimental data to be obtained with the prototype;
T12. Assembly and test of the prototype;
T13. Commissioning of the prototype.

In the course of carrying out the project the technological solutions for different components of the ALICE PHOS electromagnetic calorimeter will be verified under conditions close to those of the full-scale calorimeter. Completion of the project will make it possible to finalize the PHOS calorimeter design and to start the production phase. Besides, in the future the prototype will be used for creation of a database of electromagnetic and hadron showers in the energy range relevant for the ALICE experiment.
