New VUV emitters for laser and scintillation techniques

Objetivo

The project is aimed to search, design and study novel crystalline materials for new solid-state lasers and scintillators emitting in the ultraviolet (UV) and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) spectral ranges. Various combinations of fluoride crystal hosts with their large forbidden gap and trivalent rare earth (RE) ions (Ce3+, Pr3+, Nd3+, Er3+, Tm3+) having interconfiguration 5d - 4f transitions provide an exceptional possibility for developing high-efficiency UV/VUV lasers and scintillation materials. The development and improvement of single crystal growth techniques and the growth of high-quality fluoride crystals doped with RE ions from the melts and by the hydrothermal method in the AF - A'F - REF3 and BaF2 - REF3 systems (A, A' alkali metals) will be realised within the framework of this project. The effect of different kinds of radiation (electron beams, g-rays, X-rays, VUV radiation) on optical, luminescence and scintillation properties of complex fluorides doped with RE ions will be studied by different experimental techniques: absorption spectra of rare earth ions and colour centres induced by ionising radiation, the spectral and kinetic properties of UV and VUV luminescence, the scintillation light yield and kinetics, the efficiency and mechanisms of the energy transfer from fluoride hosts to RE ions.

The influence of crystalline environment (crystal field strength and symmetry of crystallographic site) and concentration of RE ions on luminescence properties of synthesised crystals will be analysed. The possibility for utilising crystals with intrinsic or impurity crossluminescence as attractive materials for solid state UV and VUV lasers and for neutron/gamma discrimination detectors will be tested. The most promising schemes of pumping for VUV laser action will be developed. As a final result of this project several optimal combinations of fluoride hosts and optically active RE ions will be chosen for applications in quantum electronics and scintillation technique, in particular in positron emission tomography.
