Advanced dental implants manufactured by selective laser sintering

Objectif

The overall objective of the project is to develop new dental implants, which have a high biocompatibility both at the post-operational stage and over a further long period (for many years) of human organism's functioning and, in addition, do not cause any pain to the patient during the operation of implantation. To achieve this objective, it is proposed to develop tooth's root implants of titanium which will most correspond to natural tooth's roots, extracted or lost as a result of a trauma, by their geometrical, structural and mechanical characteristics.

The main scientific objectives of the project are:
- to develop artificial tooth's root implants which will be similar to natural tooth's roots by their geometry (in order to provide the strong mechanical retention of the implant in alveolus) and by their surface porous structure (in order to provide the reliable bone tissue in-growth into the implant);
- to develop tooth's root implants which will have a dense core in order to provide the strong mechanical joint between tooth's root implant and tooth's crown implant.
It is proposed to develop tooth's root implants with the following characteristics: accuracy of shape reproduction: down to 50 mm; clearance between tooth's root implant and alveolus' wall: up to 100 mm; porosity at the surface: 35-50%; pores' size at the surface: 50-200 mm; porosity of core: 0-10%.
Furthermore, it is proposed to develop tooth's root implants with mechanical characteristics not worse than the natural tooth's roots (compressive strength: 40-70MPa).
It is proposed to develop a fabrication method of the tooth's roots implants with the required properties by direct selective laser sintering of single-component Ti powder layers (cpTi>99.5%, powder particle sizes: 20-150 mm; layer thickness: 50-350 mm; laser optical spot: 0.5-500 mm; laser beam positioning accuracy: down to 50 mm).

The main result of this project will be the development of bio-inert and corrosion-resistant dental implants with a high bio-compatibility as well as their manufacturing methods by selective laser sintering of Ti powders. The implants should not cause any pain to the patient during replacement of lost or damaged teeth. The implants will be promising in modern stomatology for the so-called "direct" implantation. The structure and operating properties of the implants will be investigated. The physical foundations of the developed methods and in particular the mechanisms of laser radiation interaction with the metal powders will be studied. The correlation between the laser processing parameters and the resulting structure and properties of the developed implants will be determined.

Programme(s)
