Neutron Optics for Fundamental Physics

Objective

The goal of this project is to perform a number of fundamental neutron optical experiments and to develop neutron optical methods for research in fundamental physics. Another important aim of the project is to joint the efforts of some groups which are working in these fields, taking into account the most effective use of the modern neutron sources, namely reactor IBR2 of the JINR (Dubna, Russia) reactor WWR-M of the PNPI (Gatchina, Russia) and reactor HFR of the ILL (Grenoble, France).

Investigations in Neutron Spin Precession Optics
· Investigation of the neutron spin rotation phenomenon caused by the spin-dependence of nuclear forces;
· Using of Larmor Clock for the measurement of the interaction time in quantum mechanics;
· Development of the neutron phase contrast imaging method based on the recently discovered Neutron Optical Spin Rotation phenomenon.
· Investigations of the dynamical neutron diffraction in detail, e.g. the experiment on the neutron two-frequency spin precession will be performed;
· Investigations of the fast neutron spin oscillations in neutron diffraction caused by the giant intercrystalline electric field for the development of the new method of the neutron electric dipole moment (EDM) search.

Investigations of neutron interaction with a moving matter using UCN
spectrometry with Neutron Interference Filters.
· For the development of a new method for material imperfections investigation a new experiment on quantum resonant scattering on the moving sample will be performed;
· Investigation of the velocity dependence of the giant absorption cross section of ultra cold neutrons. The aim is to test the 1/v law (with and without resonance corrections) and to confirm the recent obtained result for the fluctuation dependent deviation from it;
· Development of a new method for neutron time focusing based on the recently demonstrated quantum effect of phase modulation in the case of neutron diffraction on a moving grating.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
