Objective
Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, always played and is still playing essential role in the political, economic and cultural life of the Caucasus. Favourable location on the crossroads of the Great Silk Road and local trade routes promoted it to the main commercial centre of the region. During the hard times of the late middle Ages it remained all-Caucasian centre, sheltering many Armenian, Azerbaijanian and North-Caucasian intellectuals, religious and political figures, and businessmen. After Russian Empire annexed East Georgia (1801), along with Georgians, Armenians, Persians, and Azeri Turks, many new ethnic and confessional groups appeared here: Russians, Germans, Poles, the French, Italians, Ashkenazi Jews, Greeks, Syrians settled in Tbilisi. Consequently a unique ethnocultural situation was arisen, characterized by co-existence and interaction of various Western and Eastern cultures.
The scientific objectives of the proposed project are:
1. to study the 19th century Tbilisi as a cultural-historical phenomena, which displays the unique experience of the dialogue of Western and Eastern cultures;
2. to investigate various aspects of the participation of different ethnic and confessional communities in the social and cultural life of the 19th century Tbilisi;
3. to reconstruct the image of the 19th century Tbilisi and to give a comprehensive picture of urban life;
4. to determine the role of Tbilisi in the cultural, ethnoreligious, economic and political processes taken place in the Caucasus in the 19th century.
The work proposed includes a complex study of the various issues, such as:
- Everyday life, customs, morals and manners;
- Social groups and their interrelations;
- Ethnic groups and their interrelations;
- Confessional groups and their interrelations;
- Economic development of the city;
- Urban culture;
- Architecture and urban planning;
- Tbilisi as the centre of Georgian culture;
- Armenian community;
- Muslim communities;
- European communities.
The proposed project is the first endeavour to carry out wide-ranging research on multidisciplinary basis. It is expected that implementation of the project will advance the understanding of the characteristics and significance of the 19th century Tbilisi and will extend our knowledge of various aspects of its history and culture.
