Investigation of methodical problems of the measurement of elemental composition of comets and planets during space missions by an alpha, proton, and x-ray spectrometry

Objective

This proposal is aimed to the further development of the perspective method of alpha-proton-X-ray spectrometry in the in situ studies of the elemental, chemical and mineralogical composition of surface materials of comets, planets and other bodies of solar system.

The activities provided by this proposal, include:

- The carrying out of the program of laboratory measurements of elemental composition of analogs of cometary and planetary surface samples on alpha-proton-X-ray spectrometer for studies of methodical problems (including the study of surface structure influence, interaction of energetic particles with Martian atmosphere and so on) and for the development of the optimal method of the determination of elemental concentrations from the results of on-board experiments and laboratory calibration measurements;
- The development of the software for the determination of elemental concentrations from the results of onboard experiments and laboratory calibration measurements on alpha-proton-X-ray spectrometer and for the numerical simulation of the functioning of alpha-proton-X-ray spectrometer for the analysis of the methodical problems of measurements;
- The creation of the set of certified samples - analogs of analysed surfaces of planets and comets for the realization of the program of laboratory experiments and for the calibration support of the determination of the elemental composition for the real on-board experiments;
- The development, manufacturing and testing of the closed type sources of alpha-particles for the realization of the experiments to study the composition of planetary and cometary surfaces with alpha-proton-X-ray spectrometers;
- The carrying out of theoretical and experimental studies of the newly proposed method of the determination of hydrogen content (in the form of crystalline water, ice or organic compounds) by the registration of protons scattered in the forward direction.

The anticipated results should allow:

- to increase the accuracy and reliability of the interpretation of the measured alpha-proton-X-ray spectra in the experiments on the surfaces of planets, comets and other bodies of solar system;
- to extend the possible range of the application of traditional method of alpha-proton-X-ray spectrometry due to the use of newly developed alpha-sources with appreciably longer operational lifetime and substantially lower environmental hazards;
- to use new method of hydrogen determination in planetary surface materials with the measurement of spectra of recoil protons moving in forward direction.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
