Mechanism and control of water purification from colloidal and biological contaminants using coagulation methods

Objetivo

This Project will be devoted to increasing the efficiency of water treatment for the removal of colloid and biological contaminants by different coagulation methods. The broad objectives are to establish correlations between colloid-chemical properties of hydrolysis products formed during coagulation by hydrolysing salts, electrocoagulation and "electric spark" coagulation, and the degree of removal of colloidal and biological contaminants from water. Criteria for application of the most efficient coagulation methods for treatment of different types natural waters and effluents will be developed.
In the course of the research the following tasks will be fulfilled:

The modified method of "electric spark" coagulation for removal of colloid and bio-colloid admixtures will be developed.
The colloid-chemical properties (size, density and electrosurface characteristics) of hydrolysis products formed in model waters during coagulation by reagents, electrocoagulation and "electric spark" coagulation will be studied.
The methods of non-linear laser diagnostics to control the parameters of aggregates formed during coagulation by reagents, electrocoagulation and "electric spark" coagulation will be developed.
The efficiency of "electric spark" coagulation, electrocoagulation and coagulation by reagents for purification and disinfection of biological colloidal systems will be compared.
The correlation between colloid-chemical properties of hydrolysis products obtained by using the methods mentioned, and the efficiency of their purification and disinfecting action will be established.
The scientific criteria for the efficient application of the specified coagulation methods for purification and disinfection of natural waters and effluents will be developed.

New scientific results connected with the mechanisms of coagulation of colloidal and biological contaminants during coagulation by reagents, electrocoagulation and "electric spark" coagulation, establishment of correlation among colloid-chemical properties of hydrolysis product particles and their coagulation activity will be generated. These will be of both fundamental and applied interest. Practical benefits will be in the establishment of criteria for optimising coagulation methods for purification and disinfection of waters and waste waters.

The results of Project will help in development of efficient technologies for producing high-quality potable water that will reduce the risk of waterborne disease.
