Development of synthetic aperture radar marine information system tailored to pollution and fishery application

Objetivo

The main goal of the project is to develop and test a synthetic aperture radar marine information system (SARMIS) tailored to pollution and fishery application. In the framework of this main goal the partial objectives are as follows:
to set the regular collection and archiving the high resolution SAR images as well as all other remote sensing (RS), in situ and weather data over specific areas (Norwegian sea, Barents sea, Caspian sea) in the interests of oil spill monitoring and fishery management;
to develop an improved model of SAR image modulation by current and thermal gradients on sea surface needed for elaboration of radar image feature detection and recognition techniques;
to develop on the basis of improved model, to formalise and to bring to the software level the algorithms of detection, interpretation and measurement of radar signatures of oil spills, frontal and current phenomena;
to realise these procedures in form of tools integrated into the geoinformation system which SARMIS will be based on;
to establish a WEB-server providing scientific community with the information on project results and access to the created SAR image features catalogue and to the developed image processing tools.

Within the Project all available remote sensing and in situ data oriented to fisheries management and sea oil pollution control from two specific regions (Norwegian/Barents and Caspian Seas) will be bring together. It will include satellite images, such as ERS/ENVISAT SAR, NOAA, AVHRR, altimeters and ocean colour sensors, which are already archived and those ones to be acquired.
The main innovation of the project consists in the development of GIS-integrated automatic tools for detection and recognition of manifestation of ocean surface phenomena that are of great importance for fish industry and environmental protection services. The image processing techniques will include elements of wavelet analysis, neural network approach and will assimilate predictions of an improved radar-imaging model. As an interim project output and catalogue of radar signatures of the mentioned phenomena will be compiled on the basis of careful analysis and interpretation of the collected SAR images. The obtained research results will be put into easy to browse and user-friendly Web site
The following major results are expected from the Project:
creation of versatile data set, of integrated satellite and in-situ data featuring different types of manifestations of the ocean fronts and oil slicks;
development of an improved radar imaging model that includes the expanded set of physical mechanisms affecting the studied ocean surface phenomena;
compilation of electronic catalogue of typical radar signatures of fronts and slicks;
elaborating of algorithms for automatic detection, extraction and classification of front and slick signatures on radar imagery;
development of GIS-integrated program modules of image pre-processing and thematic processing according to the developed automatic algorithms;
creation of easy to browse and user-friendly Web-site giving clear and complete overview of the project results and searchable data base in the radar signatures catalogue.
