Objective
The aim of the project is to investigate some sites located in three areas of Kazakhstan affected by problems of aridisation and inefficiency of irrigation works: Semirechie, South Kazakhstan and Central Kazakhstan. Studies of the present features will be followed by the study of the evolution of precedent irrigation works in the same sites (from the 300 BC to XVIII AD). The research will be performed by 8 teams of scientists of environmental and archeological disciplines (3 teams of INTAS state members and 5 teams of NIS states). Experts in paleoclimatology, geomorphology, hydrology, pedology, paleobotany, palinology, archeology, laboratory analysts and computer and GIS specialists of 4 nations will be involved in joint works. Advanced techniques of survey, laboratory analyses and computerized documentation will be used.
The knowledge of the rise, restructuring and disruption of agricultural works of the past under the forcing of climatic, hydrological, anthropogenic and political changes, will provide a wider frame for approaching the present hydrological features and problems in the same areas; and will eventually sort out diagnoses and prognoses of practical socio-economical importance.
The works will be done in 33 months, from May 2001 to December 2003. Scientific communication will be given by reports, articles and electronic media.
