Objetivo
The main objective of the project is to study the various physical and morphological properties of diamonds grown under various pressure, temperature and melt composition; to study the peculiarities of capture of inclusions by diamonds depending on conditions of crystallization; to compare these properties to those of natural diamonds.
More specifically , we are planning :
1- to grow single crystals (0.1-1.0 ct ) diamond in basic Fe-Ni-C system with addition of H2O, H2, FeS, FeNiS, and silicates;
2- to investigate physical properties of diamond crystals by optical spectroscopy, ESR, MMR;
3- to carry out progressive P,T-treatment of the grown crystals (up to T=2200 C, P=80kbars) in order to understand the evolution of the point defects;
4- to determine by chromatography the composition of the volatile components in the reaction volume after the experiment, the chemical and molecular composition of the gaseous impurities in the synthesized diamonds;
5- to estimate the post-experimental molecular composition of the fluid, on the base of the determined composition of the volatiles, under the P,T-parameters of the experiment, and to compare it with the composition of the gaseous impurities in the synthesized diamonds;
6- to study the influence of the growth conditions , composition of the melt and amount of additives upon the morphology of the diamond crystals;
7- to define phase and chemical composition of crystalline and gaseous-liquid inclusions in synthetic diamonds;
8- to study influence of growth conditions and P,T-treatment upon gemmology properties of diamond;
9- to compare the properties of the synthetic diamonds with those of natural diamonds.
These relations will be used for a) explaining the differences in behaviour of the various types of natural diamonds and of the synthetic diamond of various origins, b) a better understanding of diamond genesis in nature and c) improving the methods used for high quality diamond manufacturing.
