Objective
The main objective of the proposal is develop new layered "solid lubricant / hard intermediate material / steel substrate" composite coatings in order to essentially increase the longevity of aeronautic friction units operating under vacuum, dry and environmental humidity conditions. As a result, the endurance life of the surface lubricant engineering structures possessing relatively low friction coefficient (min. value of 0,01) will be significantly increased in comparison to conventionally sputtered coatings (MoS2, WS2) The 3-10 times increase in longevity of the friction units is expected to be achieved.
The objectives of the proposal:
to develop by either MW-plasma CVD, magnetron sputtering or advanced ion-assisted pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique the layered structures composed of the outer solid lubricant MoSX or MoSeX and the intermediate thin film:
(i)- super-hard diamond-like carbon film, or;
(ii)- diamond thin film; or
(iii)- ceramic Ti-C-N film pre-deposited onto the steel. To additionally reduce by 20-50% the friction coefficient, carbon atoms will be implanted into the outer lubricant to minimize its shear strength. It is also proposed to apply ion-mixing processes to improve the adhesion strengths;
to develop by pulsed laser deposition of moisture-resistant layered intercalated solid lubricant composite coatings consisting of a metal containing outer layer (MoSx(Ni), MoSex(Ni), MoSx(Au), or MoSex (Au)) and a diamond-like carbon intermediate layer;
to develop the composite structure by either CVD or PVD pre-deposition of WC-W or Mo intermediate layers, followed by thermochemic surface treatment in sulphur containing environment, resulting in WS2 or MoS2 surface formation.
The main scientific objectives under the proposed research is to investigate the synergistic effects occurred in the advanced "solid lubricant / hard intermediate material / steel substrate" composite layer systems operating under various environmental conditions. This objective will be achieved by investigation of the structural and phase changes occurred during wear performance of the proposed composite layered systems. The specific objective is to investigate the synergistic effects initiated in the interface regions of the related systems. To optimise the advanced PLD processes and to develop the innovative solid lubricant coatings, the related computer simulation will accompany the experimental study of the laser ablation.
The distinctive feature of the developed layered materials (for example, as compared with molybdenum disulfide) is the high stability of tribotechnic characteristics under drastic changes in environmental conditions. These proposed developments will also contribute to more widespread use of solid lubricants both in aerospace and non-aerospace applications (forming tools, bearings, X-ray rotating anode, mass spectrometers, vacuum pumps).
