Objectif This projects aims to investigate the transmission of helminth zoonoses from the polluted environment to man. The project will focus on helminths of dogs since a number of these such as Echinococcus granulosus are known to be dangerous pathogens to man and there has been a rapid increase in human incidence in recent years in central Asia. The objectives of this research are to a) determine the significance of dog-born parasites in the pathology of human diseases; b) to document the extent of environmental pollution with the infective stage of these parasites; c) to gain a better understanding of the epidemiology and transmission dynamics of these parasites and d) to be able to make recommendations to policy makers in terms of risk of human diseases and of the most cost-effective means of control. The project is a multidisiplinary team that involves parasitologists, veterinarians, epidemiologists, physicians and diagnosticians. This will allow the collaborators to identify infected dogs, the contamination of the environment with dog faeces and helminth eggs. To do these modern techniques in immunodiagnosis and molecular biology will be used. This will not only help to confirm the species of helminths in dog excrement, but also the extent of contamination with eggs of particularly dangerous helminths such as Echinococcus. Physicians will confirm the diagnosis of suspected cases of these diseases that are referred to hospitals in central Asia such as Bishkek or Almaty and develop epidemiological analysis of likely sources of infection. Epidemiologists will also develop risk models for the transmission of these pathogens from the environment to man and develop models for the control of these diseases and the effects of likely intervention strategies. The expected results will indicate the effect of environmental pollution with dog helminths, the risks to human health and the likely outcome of intervention strategies (such as anthelmintic treatment of dogs) in the improvement of human health.
