Studies of Ion Energy Confinement in Helical Axis Stellarator

Objective

The main objective of the project is to study the electric field influence on the ion energy confinement in helical axis Stellarator TJ-II for a large variety of magnetic configurations, plasma parameters and heating scenarios.
For this purpose it is suggested to use two diagnostics: Heavy Ion Beam Probe (HIBP) diagnostics for measurement of the plasma electric fields and Charge Exchange (CX) diagnostics both for measurements of ion temperature profiles and for study of beam heating particle behaviour. These diagnostics are installed on TJ-II and have produced the first results. For the purpose of this project they will be upgraded. Signal to noise ratio of HIBP diagnostics, its time and energy resolutions will be improved by replacement of the detectors of the secondary ion energy analyser and by installation of the new primary ion source system. To CX diagnostic set up one more neutral particle analyser of a compact type will be added to provide a study of behaviour of suprathermal plasma ions simultaneously with a study of bulk plasma ions.
Two experimental campaigns on TJ-II are planned for the program. During the first one the influence of radial electric field on the ion energy confinement in the Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) heated plasma will be studied. The second one will deal with the investigation of the confinement in the combined (ECR+NBI) heated plasma and the study of the suprathermal ion confinement will be added. The studies will be carried out for variety of magnetic configurations, plasma parameters and heating scenarios.
The obtained experimental data will be analysed by comparison with theory predictions taking into account the radial electric fields into the plasma. The objective is to find conditions under which the ion energy confinement and the confinement of suprathermal ions is described by the existing theory and where it should be further developed. Results might have implications both, for future experiments on Stellarators and for design of new devices. They may be used for estimation of prospects of helical axis Stellarator configuration for fusion reactor.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
