Prevention of Environmental Pollution by Sewerage Tunnel Failures

Objetivo

The main reason for failure of sewerage tunnels is the decrease of their linings bearing capacity due to concrete corrosion in the aggressive gaseous atmosphere, resulting in a local lowering of the lining thickness in the upper part of the tunnel with increasing time. This causes the redistribution of stresses in the lining, which can eventually result in the loss of its bearing capacity and failure of the structure accompanied by sewerage water breakthrough into the environment.
The aim of the project is the prevention of such situations and their serious ecological consequences connected with a pollution of surrounding soils and underground water. With this aim the mathematical modelling of the interaction of sewer tunnel linings subjected to corrosion with the surrounding soil mass will be provided and a new analytical method will be developed for the determination of the disturbed lining stress state and evaluation of its bearing capacity under different forms of loading, such as weight of soil surrounding the tunnel, external pressure of underground water, weight of buildings or structures on the surface, moving transport loads. The corresponding computer program will be created giving the possibility changing the lining thickness in the upper part of the tunnel and checking the strength of structure to determine the residual lining thickness in the top of the arch at which the structure ceases to possess the necessary safety factor. On that basis using the experimental dependencies of decreasing the lining thickness on time one can evaluate the durability of the tunnel, predict hazardous situations and prevent them by lining inspection and repair. The method proposed will be based on the new analytical solutions of the corresponding plane problems of mathematical elasticity theory for a semi-infinite linearly deformable medium simulating the soil mass weakened by a circular opening supported by a ring of a variable thickness simulating the sewer tunnel lining subjected to the concrete gaseous corrosion. The problems will be solved with the application of complex variable analytic function theory, conform mappings and complex series. The time dependent soil properties will be taken into account with the application of the linear hereditary creep theory using the method of variable moduli.
The influence of the non-linear behaviour of soils as well as the space character of problems connected with building and transport loadings in the direction along the tunnel axis will be evaluated by 2D and 3D numerical modelling.
The analytical and numerical results will be verified by the laboratory investigations using sand and plaster modelling. The experimental data concerning the speed of a concrete corrosion e.g. dependencies of the lining thickness at the top of the arch with time applied to the design for determining the lining durability and the necessary time of its observation and repair will be investigated in-situ by permanent monitoring provided using the special indicators placed on the structure (patent of Russian Federation No 2156452 with priority from 16.06.1999 "Method of control corrosion failure rate of concrete and reinforced concrete constructions and facilities"). The properties of repaired and reclaimed concrete construction (chemical grouts and covers) will be investigated with the aim of prediction of the linings durability after repair.
As a result of the project new and effective design methods and corresponding software will be developed for determining the decrease of bearing capacity of sewerage tunnel linings subjected to gaseous corrosion and evaluating the linings durability and the time of the necessary inspections and repair on the basis of experimental data concerning the rate of corrosion obtained in situ. The dependencies of the linings durability on the main influencing factors will also be obtained. The use of the project results will prevent hazardous situations in sewerage tunnels with prevention of sewerage water breakthrough into the environment resulting in a pollution of soils and ground water.
