Objetivo
This project is intended to combine efforts of 2 INTAS Member State and 2 Russian teams to carry out research on the chemical composition and structure of the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UT/LS).
The main science objectives are to further our understanding of the causes for observed mid-latitude ozone changes in the past, present and future by quantifying the impact of human activity, through emissions of source gases from the surface and from aircraft, on the chemical composition of the atmosphere within the context of natural variability.
The following three main areas of research will be carried out:
- Study of the response of UT/LS ozone to solar variability and its impact on radiative forcing and climate;
- Study of the role of coupled interactions between dynamics, transport and chemistry in controlling the structure, variability and composition of the UT/LS region;
- Study the causes of past changes and possible future changes in the composition and structure of UT/LS
.
This project will be a coupled research programme consisting of theoretical studies including numerical modelling and data analysis. The model calculation will be carried out with general circulation model, two-dimensional and three-dimensional chemistry-transport models. The analysed data will include ozone, aerosol, temperature, winds fields collected from ground-based and satellite long-time observations.
The proposed research will produce a range of results relevant to the issue of ozone change and within the context of global change, pollution of the global atmosphere and the consequent risks to the environment. These will include:
- Advances in knowledge concerning the factors controlling atmospheric composition and structure, its spatial and temporal variability, its response to perturbation due to both human activity and natural events, and impact on the Earth's climate.
- A quantitative basis for predicting future changes in ozone due to natural causes and emissions from the surface and aircraft;
- Data on atmospheric composition and physico-chemical processes in the UT/LS region.
- The dissemination of results to the wider community via international reports, evaluations, and publication in recognised journals and presentation at scientific meetings and conferences;
- A substantially augmented pool of trained interdisciplinary scientific personnel, available for the solution of complex problems, both in the environmental area and in other disciplines.
This research project will produce a wealth of results, which will have significant value to government and industry in the development of policy to protect our environment and the response from business as well as its intrinsic scientific value.
