Water quality management information tool for rivers basins based on environmental and economic considerationspects

Objective

The project deals with the extension of a decision support system for the water quality management of river basins, hereby integrating environmental and socio-economical considerations.

More specifically, the objectives of the project are:

1. To investigate the similarities and the differences in the approaches for the environmental and economic management of the water quality of river basins in the EU and Russia;
2. To define a common platform for a decision support system (DSS) for the water (quality) management improvement, taking environmental and economic processes into account;
3. To adapt and extend the Russian "Hydro-manager" DSS for water management improvement, as to make it meet the requirements of integrated basin management, as expressed in the new Water Framework Directive of the EU;
4. To apply the (new) DSS in river basins in Russia and Belgium.

The extensions to the DSS include the modification of the optimisation and decision support procedures, the extension of the water quality simulation programs and of the data handling procedures (GIS).

The newly developed tool will be applied and evaluated on river basins in the EU and in the Russian Federation (Seine, Senne, Ob).
