Objective
The nuclear industry is currently facing the major problem of the concentration of generated radioactive waste for further disposal or decontamination. Their treatment requires at some stage the extraction of lanthanides and actinides, together or separately, from effluents of high salinity and acidity. Therefore an urgent need to develop cost effective and efficient extracting agents comes to light.
Organic extractants capable of selective and efficient removal of long-lived radionuclides from aqueous waste streams have proved to be applicable to industrial extraction processes in radioactive waste remediation. Calixarenes, which are multifunctional macrocycles, reveal themselves as a very promising subject for investigation from this point of view. Evidently, calixarenes, that are immobilized in the cone conformation, represent universal platforms for preorganisation of the corresponding ligating groups on the same face of the molecule and hence for the construction of ionophoric molecule for polyvalent actinides and lanthanides.
This research program is aimed at developing of new types of organic chelators on the base of adamantylated calixarenes and phosphorylated polyoxycalix[4]arenes bearing various receptor groups (mainly phosphorus containing CMPO-, TOPO-like fragments) that are targeted for complexation with hard cations of di-, tri- and tetravalent metal ions. It is proposed to carry out the design and synthesis of new ionophores; to study extraction and complexation properties of these macrocycles in respect of f-element cations and to incorporate the best ones from the obtained calixarene ligands into selective extraction of actinides from real radwastes.
By the fulfilment of the present project it is expected to obtain a new type of organic chelators intent on radionuclide complexation and effective under highly acidic and saline conditions. The obtained results will be valuable not only for radionuclides separation in technology, but also for obtaining of the pure radionuclide fractions and for solving the problems of the design and synthesis of complexing agents for nuclear medicine.
Scientific teams participating in this project have thorough experience in the synthesis and structure investigation of macrocyclic compounds as well as in the study of their host-guest complexes and development of extraction processes in radioactive waste management.
