Evaluation of Current Environmental State and Ecological Risk in Fergana Valley region

Objective

The natural and technogenic conditions of Fergana Valley, the increasing population density in this territory, the accumulated radioactive wastes and the wastes of the ore processing industries, the negative effect of pesticides in some zones of the Valley resulted in a harsh environmental situation in Fergana Valley. The threat of hazardous situation is doubled due to many technogenic objects located there and landslide, mud flow processes may appear in seismically active zones.
The integrated evaluation of ecological situation of all environment mediums will aim at the identification of all environmental risks of hazard. The analysis of available data will allow receiving realistic ecological picture of the soil, the surface and underground waters, the natural and agricultural plants and of the atmospheric air. The Impact of industrial operations will also be evaluated with determination of level of pollution of the environment and probability of related natural and industrial catastrophes. Field works, sampling of polluted environment mediums with further analysis using modern equipment, will check obtained information.
Making use of the GIS software systems will create during the project implementation an integrated information database. As a result of this project a specialized map of risk indicators will be prepared. Preparing such map needs an accurate approach to risk assessment criteria. That will be done by heuristic analysis of international practice, selecting and applying optimum method of assessment in the region. Next step will be elaboration of recommendations for adaptation of this method to the other countries and regions of Central Asia.
The objectives of the project can be achieved only by coordinated work of several groups of experts on various environmental mediums and analysis of natural and technogenic factors. The complexity of the work is that while the region is a single natural object itis located in the verge of several countries being, therefore, evaluation of environmental state and risks of hazards can be made only within one collaborative project.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
