Objective
The nominated objectives consist in finding of new physical information, concerning:
the frames of stability of the tubular electron beams in both regimes of the direct electron current and of the multiple electron reflections;
the electrostatic confinement, ionisation and production of highly charged ions in tubular electron beams;
the experimental proof of the off-axis extraction of ions from a tubular electron beam;
a possibility to study low energy fusion reaction relevant to Solar plasma in a Tubular Ion Trap Apparatus.
The researches foreseen are planned to be fulfilled by the teams from MSL (Stockholm, Sweden), IAP (Frankfurt/M, Germany), JINR (Dubna, Russia), and SRPC "Istok" (Friazino, Russia) using the EBIS sources TestEBIS and Krion-2 and specially elaborated supplemented original fast electronics for them, numerical codes IGUN and OPERA-3D, and the cathode technology available in these organisations.
It is expected:
to improve the software, the equipment, the set ups and the technology available, adapting them for studies of processes in the tubular electron beam systems;
to make theoretical calculations and computer simulations of the tubular beam behaviour in various conditions;
to measure high frequency radiation spectra from the tubular electron beam systems in regime of the direct current and in the electron reflection mode;
to measure efficiency of electron and ion confinement and evolution of charge state spectra;
to measure efficiency of ion confinement in different spaces of a tubular beam in the regions with different electric potentials;
to fulfil a theoretical analysis of the results obtained.
The following results of the project are expected:
The basic theoretical and experimental physics information about the steady state and limits of direct intense electron tubular beam at different conditions, travelling in drift tube with both interior and exterior tube walls, about ion confinement and ion production in such beam.
The basic theoretical and experimental physics information about the processes of electron accumulation in a multiple electron reflection regime in the pulse mode of operation for tubular beams with both internal and external tube walls, about ion confinement and ion production in such beams.
Experimental realisation of the proposed method of off-axis extraction of ions, produced in tubular beams, which should allow to obtain the ion beam emittance on a small level similar to ion beams extracted from solid cylindrical beams along the magnetic axes.
Experimental study of efficiency of ion confinement in the tubular beams in the regime of multiple electron reflections for one and two different ion traps on different potential levels, that opens possibility to study precisely low energy nuclear reactions between bare nuclei of light elements, relevant to Solar plasma.
The results obtained should give really new possibilities in traditional (atomic physic, accelerators) and in rather novel fields (nuclear astrophysics, medicine, ion implantation et. al.) and are expected to be exploited by the whole community which uses intense electron beams and highly charged ions.
