Novel higher carboranes and boranes: synthesis and applications for antitumour neutron capture therapy, and new materials

Exploitable results

Compounds for the treatment of cancer by neutron capture therapy which have been synthesized include the known compound, Na2[B12H11SH] (BSH) for which a new synthesis has been developed. In addition, a number of new derivatives of the boron clusters [B12H12]2- and C2B10H12 with functional tumour-seeking groups have been synthesized. These have included (I) phthalocyanine and rhodamine derivatives of [B12H12]2- , (ii) thiourea, thiol, selenocyanate, hydroxy and acyloxy derivatives of [B12H12]2-, (iii) ether lipid and phosphonate derivatives of carborane, (iv) carborane derivatives of porphyrins, aminoacids, and mercaptans. Seven of the prepared compounds have been the subject of biological investigations.
