Research and development of scintillating PbWO4 crystals for electromagnetic detection

CORDIS provides links to public deliverables and publications of HORIZON projects.

Links to deliverables and publications from FP7 projects, as well as links to some specific result types such as dataset and software, are dynamically retrieved from OpenAIRE .

Exploitable results

The project was focused on the development and testing of new heavy scintillating crystal to be applied in high energy physics near the coming up collider environment which are requiring stringent properties like fast response, good rasiation hardness, high density to minimize the length, for a large number of radiation length. The work has been recognized by the high energy community through the adoption of PbWO4 crystal as baseline for the CMS detector which will require 11m3 of such crystal to be produced. This has allowed INP of Minsk, IHEP and LAPP to participate in this collaboration and the Bogoroditsk factory to develop their production and to propose an improvement programme in the frame of the ISTC programme to be able to answer an important part of the forthcoming needs. Other branches of the particles physics at lower energies have shown their interest and the results have been largely presented at different international conferences. During the work programme a fruitful relationship was established between the University of Technology of Annecy (physical measurements department) and the INP of Minsl, mainly in the investigation of PbWO4 crystal structure.
