Molecular diversity and evolution of the human genome in northern Siberia.

Objective

The aim of this project is to develop a network of scientists from the NIS to work on molecular diversity and evolution of the human genome in northern Siberia which began in 1993 and to co-ordinate the research in a joint project. Six institutes are involved in this phase of the joint research project.

The project will include: analysis of the diversity of immunoglobulin, HLA and other genetic markers in Siberian populations; analysis of the variability of mitochondrial DNA; and setting up an appropriate data base for evolutionary and phylogenetic analysis.

This project is done in the context of reconstructing the recent historical and evolutionary past of men who used to reside in Siberia and of providing clues on the genetic diversity and ethnogenesis of the tribes of northern Siberia. The originality of the project, on the evolution and diversity of the human genome in Siberia, is the combination of traditional humanitarian studies and up-to-date methods of molecular biology and genetics, mathematical and computer-assisted models, thus creating specific data banks and bases.
