Objective
The three-dimensional distribution of shear wave velocity and shear wave Q in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea will be defined. This project is an extension of previous work.
Analogue and/or digital seismographic stations located in the study areas will be used together with Rayleigh and/or Love wave data (the latter if the seismogram quality is good). The regional dispersion and anelastic attenuation of Rayleigh and/or Love waves will be computed and inverted. For this purpose various methods will be used: from a correct acquisition of data and subsequent two-station surface-wave velocity measurements, to inversion methods for velocity structure and methods for verifying the reliability of the inversion results.
The determined S-velocity and internal friction models of the crust and upper mantle will be correlated with known surface features in order to discuss the tectonic setting of the areas. The framework so developed will be a necessary ingredient in understanding the evolution. Finally, regionalisation and tomographic techniques will be applied in order to obtain regionalised tomographic imaging of the solid structure.
The study is expected to provide a clearer picture of the elastic-anelastic behaviour of the crust and upper mantle of the Mediterranean and Black Sea.
The final results will be produced as: contour maps showing characteristic depths in the form of horizontal slices; digital regionalised tomographic imaging of solid structures in the form of three-dimensional blocks with different cross-sections; and definition of representative S-velocity and Q(-1 internal friction ranges of the crust and upper mantle.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
