Continental rift tectonics and sedimentary basins evolution

Objetivo

Active continental rift systems containing deep lakes present an excellent opportunity to investigate the interactions between geodynamic processes and sedimentary basin development. Although considerable data are available concerning these rift basins, major questions remain unsolved concerning the response of the continental lithosphere to the processes which are at the origin of the rifts.

The aims of this project are to gain a better understanding of the shallow and deep structure of the continental rift zones through studies of mainly the Baikal and Tanganyika rifts and to examine the geodynamic processes governing the evolution of sedimentary basins contained in these rifts. These aims will be realised by combining the results of geological and geophysical studies of the land and lake regions of the two rifts. Combining the experience gained in the study of deep rift basins in various geodynamic environments by the different teams and the modern techniques available, both for experimental work in the field and for laboratory research such as processing of the data and modelling, permits a multi-disciplinary approach to the investigation of active rift basins. Within this network, scientific teams will be organised which will jointly investigate selected topics, in which the Russian research teams will bring their experience and extended knowledge of the rift regions, and the west European teams new investigation techniques.

The knowledge of ongoing and measurable processes in active basins supports the interpretation of ancient rift sediments which commonly contain accumulations of hydrocarbons and gives valuable information for seismic/tectonic hazards assessment. The activities of the network will comprise field work as well as laboratory investigations. The project will mainly focus on the Baikal rift, as well as on sedimentary basins in southern Siberia which represent rift basins in different stages of evolution. Comparative aspects will also be investigated in the Tanganyika-Malawi rift.

The investigated topics include: the analysis of the relationship between ancient and Cenozoic structures; the determination of the geometry of basins through time, identifying the kinematics of presently active structures; the interpretation of existing geophysical data to study the deep structures; the investigation of the thermal structure and history of lithosphere and asthenosphere through the study of volcanism and heat flow; and modelling of the origin of the rift basin and evolution. The acquisition of equipment foreseen in the project will allow the Russian groups to improve the performance of processing the information: the United Institutes of Geology, Geophysics and Mineralogy at Novosibirsk will be able to develop satellite image processing and GIS, the Institute of the Earth's Crust at Irkutsk, will increase its computer facilities for processing geophysical information.
