This joint research project aims to develop a unified approach to diffractive hadronic and deep inelastic scattering at high energies. The major goals of the project are: understanding the microscopic QCD structure of the pomeron. Here the major emphasis will be on studying the spectrum and solutions of the generalized BFKL equation for the dipole cross-section which was recently developed by the members of the collaboration. Initial results of the approach are encouraging, but more work is needed on applications to specific deep inelastic processes to be studied at HERA and to the hadronic scattering. One of the thrusts will be the calculation of the diffraction cone for the BFKL pomeron which has not been done before. Calculation of the structure function of the pomeron is another outstanding problem. The ultimate goal is to derive a unified description of the rising hadronic cross-sections and the HERA data on structure functions. Another goal is understanding the non-perturbative structure of nucleons and formulating the specific tests of the mesonic contents of nucleons in the Drell-yan and deep inelastic scattering experiments; and possibilities of direct determination of the mesonic contributions to the proton structure function at HERA and in low energy experiments at COSY. In addition, the analysis of possibilities of testing colour transparency ideas in dedicated experiments at CEBAF will be carried out, in particular in the vector meson production and (e, e’p) scattering on light nuclei, and hadronization in nuclear targets; and as well as investigation of new spin effects in deep inelastic scattering with production of polarized hadrons in the final state.
