As in many other cultivated crop species much effort is directed at the production of genetic maps of rye by employing molecular marker techniques. Beside the anonymous or known function DNA probes mainly used for mapping only a few examples are known, where gene loci have been incorporated. Using different mapping populations nine different gene loci have been mapped on five different chromosomes as listed below:
genes determining self fertility (S, Z, S5) on chromosomes 1R, 2R and 5R,
gene determining reduced plant height (Ddw1) on chromosome 5R,
gene determining male fertility restoration (Rfg1) on chromosome 4R,
gene determining hairy peduncle (Hp) on chromosome 5R,
gene determining absence of ligules (al) on chromosome 2R,
gene determining waxless plant (wa1) on chromosome 7R,
gene determining waxy endosperm (Wx) on chromosome 4R.
The mapping data were compared with already existing data for homoeologous regions containing equivalent loci in other cereals. It is shown that some of the loci analysed are highly conserved.
