Dynamics and interaction of self-organised flows and coherent structures in rotating stratified fluids, and application to density fronts and vortices in the ocean

Objective



Stratified ocean is a kind of non-linear system where various natural factors act as regular and irregular forcing and generate large-scale self-organised flows, in particular quasi-steady fronts accompanied by unsteady coherent structures such as transverse jets and mushroom-like currents or dipoles. The interactions of dipoles with each other and with coastal ridges give rise to the formation of more complex structures (tripoles, quadrupoles and their combinations) and strongly influence the behaviour of fronts. To understand the role which these mesoscale coherent structures play in the dynamics of fronts and the cross-frontal water and momentum exchange, one needs models which describe quantitatively these processes.

At present the models are hardly developed and the main goal of this project is the creation and improvement of the models. The project will be realised in the following three stages: general theoretical consideration and the choice of governing parameters; small-scale and large-scale laboratory experiments and creation of quantitative models; and verification on the base of oceanic data; and the improvement of process modelling in the field of dynamics and interaction of self-organised flows and coherent structures in rotating stratified fluids.
