Objective
In key technologies tailor-made new materials are of increasing importance, e.g stable electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction for operating industrial electrolysers. Research and development into metallic glasses and nanocrystalline alloys have expanded enormously over the past few years. Metallic glasses are non-crystalline solids lacking long-range periodicity of the atomic arrangement; they can be produced by a range of different techniques, e.g. melt-spinning whereby a stream of molten alloy is ejected through a nozzle and quenched on the surface of a rotating chill-block to form thin ribbons. Nanocrystalline alloys are comparatively new materials consisting of 1 to 100 nm-sized clusters of one or more crystalline phases; the grain boundary volume represents about 50% of the total volume. Apart from controlled crystallization of metallic glasses a range of other processing techniques can be employed to manufacture such nanocrystalline materials.
Amorphous and nanocrystalline alloys possess a range of exciting and novel properties such as soft ferromagnetism, relatively high electrical resistivity, high strength and excellent electrocatalytic and corrosion behaviour which are finding applications in key industrial sectors. The objective is to develop fundamental understanding of the formation, structure and properties of amorphous and nanocrystalline materials. The investigation will lead to a better understanding of the microstructure/property relationship, which is essential for exploiting the material advantages in the design of new components and devices.
