The regulation of ethnic and regional conflicts in the former Soviet Union

Objective

This project aims at identifying the factors impeding the resolution of tensions and conflicts arising from ethnic and regional identities in the NIS; to enable researchers in the NIS make use of literature concerning techniques generated in western Europe for avoiding, regulating and managing ethnic and regional conflicts; and to examine the role of international institutions, including the UN, the CSCE, the EU and the Council of Europe, in domestic conflict in the NIS.

Research will include sharing of information on ethnic and regional conflicts; comparative research projects on particular aspects; sending documentation and literature from western Europe to the NIS; the writing of articles (44 articles from NIS participants as well as articles from west European participants); the preparation in the first year of three books in Russian and the publication of articles of NIS researchers in western books and journals.
