Objective
Optically transparent polymer materials which can be employed for optical waveguides over short distances of several metres will be modified in such a way that the transmitted light depends selectively on concurrent environmental factors, such as temperature, pressure, mechanical deformation, incident light, and reversible adsorption of gases or liquids. Thus it is attempted to employ polymer optical fibres (POF) as sensors which are promising and important components in future all-optical control systems.
This project is directed towards the development of polymer optical fibre sensors for the detection of alkali, earth-alkali and heavy-metal ions. The sensors will consist of a polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) waveguide for the transmission of the chemical information, and an ion-selective fluorescent dye (chromoionophore) for the transduction of the chemical recognition into an optical signal, the emitted fluorescence light. In the initial stages of the project, simple azo-functionalized crown-ethers and chelating reagents will be employed as the chromoionophores. Later, novel chromoionophores with higher selectivities and/or fluorescence quantum yields will be synthesized.
High-temperature stability, water and oil resistance is essential because such POF-sensors will be particularly exposed to environmental influences. The final sensor will consist of a PMMA-core onto which a photocrosslinked polyorganosiloxane layer doped with the chromoionophore has been applied, so that the sensor can be directly immersed in the analyte phase.
The sensor may be further optimized by covalent linkage of the chromoionophore to the polyorganosiloxane cladding, resulting in optical sensors with increased thermal/chemical stabilities, and with improved selectivities and long-term response characteristics.
