Experimental investigation of round beam operation as a way to extra high luminosity for electron-positron circular colliders

Objective

Electron-positron colliders operating since the pioneer period (1960's) have shown, with flat beams circulating, a universal fundamental limit due to space charge forces during the collision. It took almost 25 years to understand from the theoretical approach and powerful computer simulations, the complete physics of the beam-beam interaction.

More recently simulations have shown that operating with round shaped beams the limit could be considerably increased, opening a way to higher maximum luminosity as required by the next generation of circular colliders (electron-positron factories). However, experimental proof of this encouraging expectation is necessary and the VEPP-2M ring in Novosibirsk is the one that could be used for proof of such feasibility.

The essential parts of this project will consist of: systematic and precise experimental work on the present VEPP-2M machine with flat beams; testing of the new achromatic two-fold symmetry optics; further computer simulations (with different codes) of the round geometry beam-beam interactions; study of 1 x 1 bunches coherent longitudinal instabilities at high peak current and remedies; and construction of the high field superconducting solenoids.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
