Objective
A perfect two-dimensional metal becomes an insulator in a perpendicular magnetic field in the sense that current flows perpendicularly to the electric field and does not screen out the potential. This is also the case in the presence of disorder when the metal displays the quantum Hall effect (QHE), i.e. its transverse conductance locks onto an integral multiple (or certain rational fractions) of the conductance quantum e2/h over a finite range of Landau level filling factor (number of electrons per flux quantum). Non-screening appears as thermodynamic incompressibility and is associated with a gap in the quasi-particle spectrum. But as the sample edge forces the electronic density to vanish, the incompressibility must be violated, and this gives rise to a special, step-like edge structure. Currently there is widespread interest in this and the spatial extent of current flow in QHE conditions.
The collaboration unites the complementary expertise of four laboratories towards an investigation of the local current flow and charge build-up patterns under quantum Hall effect conditions. Two different approaches will be taken: to make an experimental map of the potential distribution under stationary current carrying conditions; and to observe the edge magneto-plasmon spectrum in well defined and controllable configurations of the perimeter.
The physical realization chosen for the study is that of electrons constrained to move along a high quality epitaxial heterojunction between GaAs and GaAlAs, a possibility afforded by collaboration with other laboratories not formally included in the network.
