A detailed investigation of the microscopic mechanism of the appearance and propagation of the chemical surface waves on metal surfaces at oscillatory regime of catalytic reaction has been performed using FEM (Field Electron Microscopy),FIM (Field Ion Microscopy), FIMS (Field Ion Mass Spectrometry), AES (AugerElectron Spectroscopy), LEED (Low Energy Electron Diffraction), HREELS (HighResolution Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy), DAPS (Disappearance PotentialSpectroscopy), TDS (Thermal Desorption Spectroscopy), STM (Scanning TunnellingMicroscopy) and Li-FDM (Li Field Desorption Microscopy, a new method developed in frame of the present project). The following issues have been studied: - propagation of chemical waves during the CO and H2 oxidation on platinum surface as studied by FEM/FIM at nearly atomic resolution; - spatial profile of reaction front in the reaction of carbon monoxide oxidation on platinum; - identification of surface intermediate in the NO+H2, H2+O2 reactions on the Pt(100) and Pt(111) surfaces; - modelling of surface waves propagation along the chain of the surface parts with different catalytic properties using statistical lattice models; - intentional modification of the oscillations in the CO-oxidation reaction on a Pt and Rh field emitter tips (model catalysts) using field-controlled co-adsorption of lithium; - modification of adsorptive and catalytic properties of the platinum metal surface using alkali co-adsorption; - localizing of the reaction/diffusion front in the CO oxidation reaction on Pt and Rh using Li-FDM; - in situ STM-observation of the evolution of nanometer-sized Li formation on Pt created by field-induced transfer of Li in the STM; - effect of high electric field on catalytic surface reaction (CO-oxidation on Pt). The results obtained have served as a basis for the 27 scientific papers submitted to the international scientific journals, most of them are already published and werepresented at 6 international scientific conferences (14 contributions).
