Cytokines in the brain. Cytokines are primary mediators of communication between the immune system and the brain and play a critical role in the interactions between stress, disease, and the brain. Understanding the mechanisms of the neural effects of these signals is a multidisciplinary task in which NIS scientists are already involved, together with Western Europe an laboratories, but in which success is critically dependent on the availability of high-quality reagents and the co-ordination of efforts between scientists from different disciplines including immunology and neurobiology. Therefore the role of cytokines in neural degeneration and activation of the pituitary-adrenal axis will be studied. The mechanism of the effect of cytokines in the central nervous system will be investigated. The regulation of the synthesis of cytokines in the brain and their interaction with neuropeptides is of interest. Another part of the study is the research on the effects of cytokines on regulation of thymic function by hormonal and neuronal pathways. The objectives of the project are to enable NIS scientists to have access to the high-quality reagents that are produced and distributed by one of the participating laboratories from Western Europe; and to enable them to establish contacts and conduct collaborative research with participants from Western Europe, as well as participate in meetings organized at international level by Western Europe an participants and improve their training in basic aspects of the neurobiology of cytokines.
