Fundamental aspects of quantum field theory, gravitation and string theory

Objectif

The aim of this project is to combine the efforts of eleven groups from eastern and western countries to solve some fundamental problems of quantum field theory and quantum gravity. The research programme approaches new problems in the renormalization of quantum field theories and statistical mechanics models, integrable systems, conformal field theories, quantum gravity, random surfaces, topological field theories, and string theory.

The main problems that will be analysed are: the renormalization group approach to quantum gravity; the role of integrable hierarchies in string theory and two-dimensional quantum gravity; the renormalization of complex topological interactions like S-terms in quantum chromodynamics or Chern-Simons couplings in three-dimensional dimensional gauge theories; the role of magnetic monopoles in confinement and N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories. Other problems that will be addressed are the calculation of correlation functions and form factors in integrable models, multicritical phenomena. in quantum field theory, and applications of string theory to quantum chromodynamics and statistical mechanics.

The solution of many of these problems requires collaboration between different groups because it involves sophisticated techniques of mathematical-physics, algebraic geometry, group theory, topology, differential geometry, catastrophe theory, functional analysis and probability theory.
