Objetivo
Building upon existing contacts, a network of six universities in the NIS(NIS) will be provided with the necessary means to develop a pool of technologically-based skills in a variety of key areas related to computer-based research and teaching in history. In addition to the training of personnel that will arise from the proposed initiative, a variety of products will be developed greatly adding to the collective machine-readable resources available for historical research and teaching in the NIS.
This network of NIS universities will draw upon the expertise of a parallel supporting network of six western institutions, each with appropriate expertise, to be formed for this specific purpose. The work of the individual institutions of the two networks will be integrated through a series of biannual meetings to be held in the NIS. At the end of the project, the work will be summarized at a concluding conference and the machine-readable resources arising publicly disseminated.
The creation of a pilot CD-ROM with a representation of one printed Ukrainian corpus is planned. The Belarus State University at Minsk, together with the University of Utrecht, will develop a multi-media teaching package on the history of Belarus. Moscow State University, together with the MPI für Geschichte, Göttingen, will develop a command-driven kernel of parsing software for the loading of OCR created corpora into databases and hyper-text systems. St. Petersburg State University, together with the Institut für Mittelalterliche Realienkunde, Krems, will provide a pilot CD with a digitised representation of unpublished source material on the abolishment of serfdom in the tsarist empire.
