Objective
This project is aimed at developing an analyser for trace molecule detection, using the Russian tunable diode laser (TDL) system and western technology for handling the systems and treatment of experimental data. In particular, the TDL spectrophotometer, a close optical system, will include: new TDLs operating at temperatures near room temperature; middle infrared fibre optics to simplify the system; a fast personal computer and new software to control the system; and a Chernin multipass cell to improve the optics.
The project will represent for the Moscow General Physics Institute an opportunity to collaborate with west European scientists and to integrate their own technology with western developments in specific and related fields. The Italian ENEA and the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany will take the opportunity to test the TDL system, which has substantial differences with respect to instrumentation produced in the West. During this process it will be possible to evaluate the problems and perspectives of the different technologies concerned, acquiring in this way the elements for a wider intervention in this sector and taking into account also industrial applications in environmental sciences.
A laboratory prototype of an analyser which can measure the atmospheric concentration of one molecule of environmental interest to be chosen among formaldehyde, formic acid, hydrogen peroxide, HO, H2O2, and others, will be developed.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
