Objective
The manuscript collections of Russia, notably those of Saint Petersburg, are extremely rich in Slavic, Latin, French and Hebrew manuscripts but they are poorly catalogued and photographed. There are still many manuscripts, some of which date back to the fifth to eighth century, which are little known, inadequately described and worthy of careful and intensive study.
The Institut de Recherche et d'Histoire des Textes in Paris has in recent years begun collaborative work with the National Library (formerly Saltykov-Shchedrin) and the Academy of Sciences in a complex programme of microfilming, photography, cataloguing and publication of their manuscripts. This project will follow appropriate defined scientific and bibliographic standards of compiling and cataloguing these manuscripts.
