Construction of a trilingual machine translation system based on ETAP-3 and CAT2 technologies

Objective

This project brings together two technologies of machine translation: ETAP-3, developed in Russia, and CAT2, developed in Germany, in order to create a modern machine translation system operating between Russian, German and English.

The strength of both systems will be combined, such as fully-fledged description of Russian and English grammars and sufficiently large computer lexicons of the two languages. The lexicons will be based on a comprehensive Meaning to Text model of natural language (ETAP-3) and universal unification and constraint-based formalisms for grammar and lexicon description (CAT2).

The project will be carried out along the following lines: inclusion of German as a source and/or target language in ETAP-3; inclusion of Russian as a source language in CAT2; contrastive experimental evaluation of both systems; a feasibility study aimed at finding ways of integrating the two systems into a new machine translation system or a machine translation workbench.
