The research and development work done within the scope of the project has concentrated on further development of the machine translation system prototype created within the framework of the INTAS 93-1448 project (1994-96). The main idea has been to bring together two advanced machine translation technologies: ETAP-3, created at IPPI, Moscow, Russia and CAT2, created at IAI, Saarbrücken, Germany. The work packages of the project have included. -Further development of the Russian modules of the CAT-2 system : -Expansion of the Russian lexicon, with a special emphasis on ramified syntactic and semantic information available in the ETAP-3 system version. -.Expansion and improvement of the CS, IS and intermediate gramma components aimed at the inclusion of a number of complicated linguistic phenomena. -Updating of grammars and lexicons of other CAT-2 working languages as a feedback of the development of the Russian component. - Further development of the ETAP-3 system -Expansion and improvement of the lexicon and grammar for the two principal working languages (English and Russian). -Transfer of the system to a new computer platform under Windows. -Introduction of new advanced features : handling of lexical functions, consideration of ramified subject domain information, intelligent text pre-processing -Development of the Russian-to German prototype component of ETAP-3 -Improvement and enlargement of the English components of the ETAP-3 and the CAT-2 systems Construction of a joint MT workbench aimed at offering the choice of the two systems on a single computer platform.
