Multidisciplinary earthquake prediction programme

Objective

A multidisciplinary earthquake prediction programme will be established at three sites: one in the region of Kopet-Dag (Turkmenistan), one in Transcaucasus (Georgia) and one in Kamchatka (Russia). Systems already operating will be improved and their operation maintained. New instruments for high precision temperature measurements will be installed and integrated into networks of stations for monitoring precursory earthquake phenomena in each area. The multidisciplinary programme comprises the measurement of parameters at the Earth's surface as well as measurements in and at boreholes.

The strategy is to record data of high quality, to speed up the data acquisition and to diversify the data analysis using modern computer techniques.

This programme will integrate, at the European level, basic research, data acquisition from extended existing networks, and data analysis in specialised centres in the NIS.

The main result of the first year's work is that data acquisition systems should be installed in each of the three regions selected. Preliminary results will be discussed at an international conference where scientists specialising in earthquake prediction in other areas can rapidly exchange information on this important field of research. If the co-operation between the participating organisations can be continued, an array of stations will be installed in order to get information in which direction an earthquake is in preparation.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
