Objective
This research programme consists of four main topics. The objective of each topic is both to devise novel applications and to find new products and by-products from industrial productions of the Russian Far East region.
The programme will be carried out through the following steps: purification and characterisation of enzymes with glycosidase and protease activities; preliminary isolation and evaluation of some components from extracts of the far-eastern plant Eleuterococcus, which is a traditional medicinal herb in the Oriental pharmacopoeia; organisation of an advanced Workshop on natural products from the Russian Far East for pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food applications; study and characterisation of technological biopolymers, such as laminarans and carrageenans from various species of the Far-Eastern algae, including isolation of the polysaccharides, studying their water activities in different physical forms and X-ray analyses.
